Electrification contractors

Many of our members have already electrified all or parts of their homes. This is a running list of electrification contractors we have either worked with or researched operating in Oak Park and surrounding communities. Please note: these are not endorsements, but information to help you get started on electrifying your home.

Insulation and home efficiency contractors

Many Oak Park homes, especially older ones, are drafty and leak a lot of heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. It will likely be necessary to insulate your home before being able to install a heat pump. Below are a few steps you can take and contractors that operate in this area:

Blower door tests

To determine how leaky/drafty your home is, you should do a blower door test. The process will take 1-2 hours and should cost around $400-500.

Aeroseal

New or old, loose seals and cracks in ductwork occur in 3 out of 4 homes. These gaps can leak 25–40% of the heated and cooled air meant for the living areas in your home. It is possible to greatly reduce (down to 2-3%) these leaks using a non-invasive, non-toxic process called Aeroseal. This will help you get more air from your current and future heating/cooling systems.

Hot Water Radiator Conversion

HotSpot Energy, Chiltrix distributor
Chesapeake, VA
(757) 410-8640

This vendor specializes in air-source-to water heat pumps for retrofitting hot water radiator systems. They replace existing radiators with high efficiency heat emitters. They are unique in that they have no dealers, agents, or installers. If you send them a detailed heat load calculation (Manual J report), they will design a system at no cost. The design includes a projection of annual operating cost. They can sell the complete system directly to you, and you hire a local certified installer. If necessary, they provide support and training to the installer.
